Lima COP to Lay Foundation for Paris 2015 Agreement

Governments are preparing to meet for the UN Climate Change Conference in Lima starting next week (1 – 12 December) to lay the foundation for an effective new, universal climate change agreement in Paris in 2015 while also raising immediate ambition to act on climate change in advance of the agreement coming into effect in 2020. Climate Change Heats up UK Insurance “Stress Test”

The Prudential Regulation Authority (the “PRA”) has launched its 2019 insurance stress test, which for the first time includes what the Bank of England named an “exploratory exercise” in relation to climate change. The exploratory scenario elaborated by the PRA is designed to “capture information about how different firms are exposed to difficult-to-assess risks” such as climate change. As part of this exploration, firms must consider the impact of three greenhouse emissions scenarios on their liabilities and assets valuations. Read more...

World marks earliest 'Earth Overshoot Day'

By the end of Monday, humanity's allotment of natural resources for 2019 will be all used up, according to a report. Over the past 20 years, Earth Overshoot Day has moved up three months to July 29. Read more...

The Global Climate in 2015-2019

The years 2015 to 2018 were the four warmest years on record and 2019, although only six months of data are currently available, will likely join them as one of the ve warmest years – most likely second or third warmest – if temperature anomalies continue at the current high levels to the end of the year. The average global temperature for 2015–2019, which is currently estimated to be 1.1 ± 0.1 °C above pre-industrial (1850–1900) level, is therefore likely to be the warmest of any equivalent period on record. It is 0.20 ± 0.08 °C warmer than the average for 2011–2015 Read more...

Global Carbon Budget 2019

Here we describe data sets and methodology to quantify the five major components of the global carbon budget and their uncertainties. Fossil CO2 emissions (EFF) are based on energy statistics and cement production data, while emissions from land use change (ELUC), mainly deforestation, are based on land use and land use change data and bookkeeping models. Atmospheric CO2 concentration is measured directly and its growth rate (GATM) is computed from the annual changes in concentration. The ocean CO2 sink (SOCEAN) and terrestrial CO2 sink (SLAND) are estimated with global process models constrained by observations. The resulting car- bon budget imbalance (BIM), the difference between the estimated total emissions and the estimated changes in the atmosphere, ocean, and terrestrial biosphere, is a measure of imperfect data and understanding of the contemporary carbon cycle.
